Self Harm: Cutting Too Many Deaths Too Deep

Self harm is not generally regarded as an “epidemic”, and generally fails to receive much media coverage; unless in linkage with a suicide. We all know suicide kills people (over 800,000 people a year), but we generally have the wrong (and sometimes lethal) idea that self harm doesn't kill, and if it does; it’s only a few right?


If over 880,000 a year is a few; then yeah… Just a few. [1]

WHO Suicide Report: Stop the Watch

In 40 seconds much can happen, we can finish reading a letter, polish off a glass of OJ, etc; but what if we told you that every 40 seconds someone attempted suicide? A pretty grim statistic, of which can be found circulated by many mental health organisations. But; what if we told you it was even worse? According to the WHO, the correct statistic is every 40 seconds someone dies; from suicide.

When Words are Lethal: Why “talking about it” might not be as good as we think

Suicide, it is one of the most complex, and least understood phenomena when it comes to human psychology. When we choose to discuss mental health (or mental illness for that matter) a stigma is usually present, and a sense of awkwardness usually works its way into the room. Suicide though seems quite different, it has the tendency to be romanticized both in literature and in real life (see Romeo & Juliet and more [1]). So what exactly does this mean for society?
